My custom Sentinel is the third saber in my collection and it did not disappoint. First of all, the staff at SaberForge were great, promptly replying to my customization questions with concise and clear answers. And though the lead time was long (though no longer than any other place I've bought from), my saber actually arrived about a week sooner than expected, which was awesome, so a big thank you to the SaberForge team for getting it to me as expeditiously as possible.
As for the saber itself, it is a beautiful piece. I love the finish. The genuine leather grip, which is tight and perfectly wrapped, really helps sell the antiquity of the weathering. The hilt is surprisingly light, but feels very sturdy. It was much slimmer than I was expecting too. I'm used to sabers being a little much to hold on to, but this one fits my hand perfectly. All of the detail parts and internal components are firmly attached and there isn't a loose screw or rivet to be found. The blade plug and kill switch are awesome cosmetic details that add a lot to the display and costume options for the saber too. And even though I haven't yet tested it in a full contact dueling situation, I'm confident it will hold up just fine.
This is my first custom saber with sound and the electronics continue to surprise me. I knew when I picked the 'Veteran RGB' that it would have the option to change colors and swap sound profiles, but what I didn't know is that each sound font could be paired to its own color AND blade effect. I spent the entire first day I had it, literally like 4 straight hours, setting up each sound font with their own characteristics, so I basically have ten lightsabers in one! Discovering that each sound profile had a unique 'Force Push' was also a ton of fun. The effect for 'Dark Side Relic' in particular was a real surprise! The smooth swing is incredibly responsive and the adjustable volume can go from almost whisper quiet to VERY loud. The lights are very strong and the clash and blaster effects are great as well.
If I had to find something to complain about it would probably be that the machining was almost TOO precise. The parts are so exact that their edges can actually be a little on the sharp side. The cut-out around the power switch in particular can really tear up your fingers if you let it. Given that pressing or holding the power switch is so important to so many of the electronics features (blaster deflect, blade clash/lock, force power etc.) it seems like it might be good to go over the various edges and round them over a bit to smooth them out. I ended up using my hand Dremel to gently sand the offending edges down a bit and now it's perfect, so no harm, no foul.
As I said this is the third saber in my collection and it is by far the best. I wasn't looking for another "entry level" model either. I wanted sound, lights, and durability to duel. And my Sentinel has all three. It was not exactly what I would call "cheap" per se, but it has been my experience that when buying a lightsaber you absolutely get what you pay for. And having shopped around the various custom saber sites for a few years now, I will say that the price here at SaberForge is incredibly reasonable considering all of the stuff the saber can do, and I would totally recommend them to anyone looking to start or upgrade their collection.
Haven't decided what hilt I want to go for next, but I am definitely thinking I'll be coming back to SaberForge the next time I want a new weapon from a galaxy far, far away.
5/5 stars, 10/10 for customer service.
